Bao Buns (Hoisin Chicken)

Fluffy steamed bao buns filled with sticky hoisin chicken. No peanuts — safe for everyone.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 600g chicken thighs, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce (check label: nut-free brand)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

To Serve

  • 8–12 store-bought bao buns (steamed)
  • ½ cucumber, julienned
  • 2 spring onions, sliced
  • Fresh coriander
  • Sesame seeds

Method

Marinate chicken in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger and garlic for 15 minutes.

Cook chicken in a hot pan over medium-high heat until caramelised and cooked through, about 8 minutes.

Steam bao buns according to packet instructions (usually 8–10 minutes in a steamer).

Slice cucumber into thin strips. Slice spring onions.

Fill each bao with chicken, cucumber, spring onion and coriander.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve immediately.
